Research

Ever since my earliest formal educational experiences I have been interested in understanding how the world works according to scientific principles. My research specialties include psychopharmacology, behavioral pharmacology, behavioral neuroscience and computer-controlled behavioral measurement instrumentation. In 1966, I received my B.S. in Mathematics and Physics (with the equivalent of a second major in experimental psychology) from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa followed, in 1970, by my Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Princeton University. To date I have directed/mentored the research training experience of 39 Ph.D students either in Psychology (both experimental and clinical) or in Pharmacology and Toxicology. These former students now hold positions in academia, government research laboratories, industry, and private practice. In addition to being a member of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, I am co-director of the Biobehavioral Measurement Core of the Kansas Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center at the University of Kansas. This center grant, funded by NICHD, is administered by the Life Span Institute where I hold a Senior Scientist position.
